Shanna Keith- Maddie Keith

“I’m just a regular person who had a heroic experience.”

                -Shanna Keith
My mom is my hero. She is a Cancer survivor. My mom was diagnosed with Lymphoma on July 4th 2013. She found out that she had it a couple minutes before she gave birth to my baby brother. I interviewed my mom the other day and found out a lot about her experience that I never knew before. I learned that when she was told she had Cancer she was very mad. She didn’t think that would ever happen to her. She was also mad because she was about to give birth to a baby boy who we were told would be a girl.
She went through 4 hard months of Chemo while still being there for me when I needed her. She was always positive and making me laugh when I knew she was having a hard time. She wouldn’t let it show. A big part of why she is my hero is because she had a newborn baby, who, was is the NICU because he was 6 weeks early. Luckily they were in the same hospital so my mom could go down and visit him every day.
My definition of a hero is someone who is admired for a specific action or event he or she has done in their lifetime. My mom meets all these criteria. I know for a fact that she is admired or looked up to by many people. My friend Kimmie refers to my mom as her second mom and tells me every day that she loves her. She is looked up to by my brothers and me along with neighbors and other family.
When I interviewed my mom I learned that her hospital experience wasn’t too bad. She made friends with a lot of the nurses and the doctors were always looking after her. I know my grandma went up to the hospital almost every day to see her and that helped a lot. She also told me in her interview that if she could go back in time and tell herself that she would have cancer that she would be more scared because she would know what to expect.
Something that I can take from my mom’s experience is that you should always be positive no matter the circumstances. My mom could have easily just broken down and not have wanted to see anybody or do anything, but she didn’t. She was always smiling whenever I saw her even when she was in the hospital.
I love my mom so much and she has always been my hero but after this experience and interview it just assures me that she is. She is such a beautiful woman and an amazing mom, wife, daughter, and friend. She would do anything for anyone. She is always positive and laughing and smiling.
